Here's another interview I translated from danish to english . Teddy-bear found it ( http://ibyen.dk/musik/article404751.ece ) ..
Beth starts to cry again (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/huh.gif) . And it's a really good interview btw ! (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ..
Hope my translating is good enough (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ..

Beth Hart: ”I’m no friggin drama queen.. normally”
But there isn’t many other thing in Beth’s 35-year old life, that has been normal. The Californian can again be seen live in her ”second native country”, Denmark.
By Erik Jensen

By a table on the street outside the fashionable Skt. Petri Hotel in the middle of Copenhagen, there’s sitting a middle-aged man, who’s greyish pony-tail is dangling down his back. He’s drinking a café Americano. As soon as I jump off the bike, he asks: “Is it you who has an appointment with Beth?”
Taken aback I grant, that I am there to meet the singer Beth Hart, who has for the last year swept away the Danes and seized the free position as national rockqueen, in Sanne Salomonsen’s absence.

As a lion
”Then follow me”, says the man with the pony-tail, leaves his American coffee and leads me into the hotel bar, where business men are already sitting with the first cocktail of the day. Across 2 chairs Beth Hart is lying with closed eyes, apparently sleeping deeply.

”Honey”, whispers my guide, leans over the sleeping woman and plants a big kiss on her mouth. Beth opens her eyes. He points backwards at me.

”Ehhh, hello”, she mumbles, sits halfway up and shakes her vigorious mane just like a lion, who is preparing himself to meet new challenges, or dangers.

Possibly as a part of a defence she starts talking with a tempo that quickly and effectively removes all sleepy impressions.

Sugar shock
”I’ve just eaten a gigantic chocolate-cookie, so I’m in a sugarshock,” Beth says with the comprehensive and raw voice, we have seen at the singers concerts in this country.

Then suddenly the 35-year old American looks like she’s freezing in the Danish late summer. She gathers her arms around the breasts that appear to have grown the past few years. Then she sits down again, moves forward and looks at me with her green eyes, which are lighted by a light so energic and powerful, that I feel like I’m placed under a projector in her presence. And then she whispers.

An evil dream.
”I couldn’t sleep last night. And you know what - suddenly there were these dreadful voices from the room next door. Wild screams and crying. It was like an evil dream, and it took me a while to figure out if I was awake or dreaming.

Unfortunately I was awake. It was a woman who fell out of the window, and her daughter that screamed. Horrible. The lady died,” says Beth low and looks at the floor. Her light locks falls over her face as a curtain that ends another of those dramas that seems to stick to the Californian singer with the huge potential.
A potential, which she in her own life’s drama, has made whatever she could to flush out in the oblivion, merciful ocean.

A frightened place
Already at an age of 4, Beth started to play Piano in her childhood home. Even though her parents have nothing to do with music, they started out with encouraging their daughter.

”As long as the music was a hobby for me, a part of the normal upbringing and acquiesces of knowledge, they were fine with it. But when I later wanted a music career, they stood off,” says Beth and stares empty out in the air between us, that seems to contain pictures, that only she sees.

As one of the few present citizens in Los Angeles, she is born and grown up in the endless big city with the many temptations and dangers.

Classical music
”Los Angeles is a big and frightening place, which always tempts people. Everybody moves away from there if they can, but there are always coming new people here. I have chosen to stay here.

My childhood wasn’t frightening. There wasn’t any ethnical conflicts or other problems. So I can blame my childhood for what went wrong later,” says Beth Hart and laughs as an old ship-engine, that slowly and hissing starts.

Even though the parents wished she would focus on the school and education, the music had got the hold of her. Beth Hart was admitted on Los Angeles High School for Performing Arts with cello and singing as speciality. The parents were fairly satisfied, cause after all the daughter was on her way into the respectable, classical music. But inside Beth, blues and rock was still burning with and even bigger power!

Freespace
”Where the music in the beginning was my freespace, it now because something I had to steal. I lost trust to my ability by the piano and as a singer, even though everybody else and my parents said that I was good. And then I started drinking. I was 11,” Beth explains and looks at the imaginary picturewall again.

The conversation ends. I’m trying to find the right question while Beth Hart sinks into herself. Suddenly the tears are rolling down her cheeks.

”I’m so sorry. I’m no friggin drama queen… normally. But it’s just overpowering me,” she says.

Then she stands up and gives me a big hug, while the business men and Scotty looks surprised at us. Slowly we get the interview back on the right tracks again.

Drank only in periods
”The problem was that I couldn’t handle the drinking. I have never enjoyed a drink, never. Already as a big kid I drank too much. I drank, I puked and almost fainted.
My family found out of course, and they were very upset. As 13-year old I was dragged to AA meetings. Imagine that! I was in chock and decided that I would never be like those people sitting there. And I believed my own lies, cause I was only drinking in periods.”

When Beth Hart was busy with some project in school or creating music, she was sober. She won the American talent competition Star Search as teenager and was on the top without needing any alcohol. But as soon as a break brought doubt and mistrust to her abilities, she started emptying bottles big time again.

Whisky, vodka & speed
”Even though I won that competition, no record companies wanted to touch me. It only gave me a bigger feeling of hopelessness. So I only played at the streets of Los Angeles alone, and in clubs with my band.

Are you crazy I drank. Vodka, whisky and everything else, often mixed with speed. I was a cliché - lived up to the myth about a drunk and unhappy musician. But believe me - it wasn’t because I friggin wanted it!”

On one of the clubs Beth was spotted by Cyndi Lauper’s manager. She recorded 2 records for the big company Atlantic and got nice hits, especially with ‘L.A. Song (Out Of This Town)’ in 1999. Beth Hart puts it up this way:

”I was 27 years when I wrote ’L.A. Song’. 28 when it hit charts and 29 when I was admitted in a psychiatric hospital, cause I couldn’t control the success I got.”

Guilt
With the reason ”unaccountable behaviour” she was dropped by Atlantic Records, and the down trip seemed complete.

”Success was unbearably for me, cause I had always the feeling that it was unfair. I had the lowest self-esteem and felt untalented. It was just a matter of time that they would find out how bad and lousy I was. I started to drink every day, and could in the end consume big quantities of alcohol. It gave me furthermore guilt - cause I should be fine, I have a sweet family, a cool band on now my carrier was going great. So I hurried to ruin it all. I didn’t know how to stop, or if even wanted to stop,” tells Beth Hart about the road from success to down trip.

Tattoo-boyfriend
The family turned the alcoholised singer the back. When she finally went to rehab, she only had her then boyfriend, who was a tattoo-guy (I don’t know what it’s called (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ).

»I got all my tattoos in rehab! When I got hysterical and desperate, cause they didn’t want to give me medicine, I called my boyfriend and got him out there to do something on me. They were all made over k9 months, and I have 7-8 big tattoos, so it was a rough period for my skin. And for me too.
Now I don’t get any more tattoos, cause my husband told me that I’m not allowed to.”

And he’s deciding that?

”Yes he’s deciding many thing. It’s necessary for me. I’d might as well face that. In a way I need to be administrated. And in Scotty I have found an alcoholic who has been sober for 26 years. So he has experience and knows how to control people like me,” says Beth Hart and laughs.

Married in Las Vegas
Her husband, that today works as manager for Beth Hart, was a part of the same musicenviroment as his wife, when they met.

” I was impossible and constantly hysterical at that point, so he thought I was terrible. Just like I thought he was a boring asshole. But still he took me home to his house for a week, and got the top of my abuse. After that I got into rehab again, and he visited med everyday at the clinic, even though it was a 2½ hour long drive. He proposed to me out there. But it was as if he forgot it again - but not so weird, cause I was a jerk. 1½ year later screwed up again and drove drunk, and got to prison. When I got out of there, he asked me again, and I said yes. And then we took directly to Las Vegas and got married, since then I haven’t had problems with abuse,” she says and sends a grateful smile towards the man with the pony-tail in the bar.

Get your shit together, bitch!
According to Beth Hart, the short prison stay helped more that all psychologists in the world.

”In the prison there wasn’t any joking around. They could and didn’t want to be nice to me. It was just like: get your shit together bitch! And I did. I was so far down that I found out I’m just a human being. So I started to accept myself as a human being. Those kinds usually makes mistakes, and that’s why I slowly started to live with the fact that I’m not perfect and nor are my songs,” she says.

Musically the carrier started again when Beth Hart was offered the role as the legendaric singer Janis Joplin in the musical ’Love Janis’. For months she performed every nights as Janis Joplin, that died as 27-year old, because of drugs and alcohol.

”It was good for a period, and I found out how amazing a singer Janis Joplin was. Before I didn’t hear her intense, even though I have always been compared to her. But one night it was just enough. I couldn’t act the drunk singer who died every night, anymore. I quit it right away and started to write my own songs again.”

View
The songs came out 4 years ago on the autobiographic album ’Leave The Light On’, where Beth Hart writes about her inner demons, the drugs and the booze. On the new album ’37 Days’, produced by Danish Rune Westberg, there are still songs about the personal struggle, but the view is also points towards the rest of the world.

”I have admitted, that I am never gonna be a person who rests in her self and feels peace with the world all the time. But it’s ok. To feel like that can be used creatively, and that’s what I have done on the last 2 albums. I actually can’t write songs if I’m just happy,” she says. And shines of joy!

And she has a good reason to that. At least here in Denmark, that has together with New Zealand, becomed, a kind of second native countries for the singer.
”It’s nice to be accepted here. The Danes are more open than the Americans. The scene has always been a freespace for me. It’s there I feel best.”

English:

The latest album from Beth Hart, called ’37 Days’, has already been on the market for awhile, but I would still like to take this opportunity to introduce her to those who still don’t know her yet. Beth has got to be the very best female singer on planet earth. And it has been like this already for quite a while, but too few people are of it :-)! This is nothing new. In fact, it is just one of the reasons why we even started our websites…

To be honest, I only met Beth a short time ago at Bospop, in 2006. I had never heard one note from her before. As she greeted the Dutch audience, she started out as a friendly and seemingly shy woman who had then transformed into an incredibly gifted, naturally born artist. I was completely blown away with amazement, from start to finish. This performance had made such a massive impact on me that I went out and bought everything that I could find by Beth. I think it’s fair to say that I’ve become one of Beth’s biggest fans in Northern Belgium. Wherever I go, I try to spread the message on Beth and her music and, believe me, I’ve never come across anyone who wasn’t impressed by her. And it was more than just my powers of persuasion that convinced people :-) …It was Beth’s tremendous and incredible voice and the wonderful, moving and beautiful songs that she has made with her band. The DVD, ‘Beth Hart Live at Paradiso’, is the best DVD that I own and I have a lot. This woman is so pure, so real and so lascivious, that your jaw drops open with amazement when watching her. Her vocal sound is fuller than that of Janis Joplin, her impact is stronger than that of Bette Midler and her looks are much better than those two combined :-). It has always been my opinion that music has nothing to do with sex, but if I am mistaken, it’s because this woman has thoroughly confused me…:-).

’37 Days’ is the fifth album by Beth and, once again, it’s full of gripping, musical expressionism, with songs that are hard, fist-clenching and shocking to songs that are heartfelt and emotional. The album grows every time you listen to it. For me personally, the best songs are “Soul Shine”, “Jealousy” and “One Eyed Chicken”. The single, “As Good As It Gets” is also nice, but I like the gutsy AC/DC sounding song “Face Forward Son” a lot better. There is no real slow, blues song like “Am I the One” from the ‘Immortal’ album (Beth Hart Band), but the above mentioned “Soul Shine” is very good. Her last studio album, ‘Leave the Light On’ was a fairly successful album in Holland. It’s about time that Belgium gets bowled over by this amazingly solid singer who not only can sing, but who can write great songs as well. Do yourself a favour and get a hold of something by Beth. Look for her songs, both past and present, and listen with bewilderment, just as I do, to the best, living female singer in the world… Beth Hart!

Nederlands:

Haar vorig studioalbum ‘Leave The Light On’ kende een redelijk succes, zeker in Nederland. BETH HART!

Thank you Nerma!!!!

Loved reading the interview and your translation worked great!

Based on Beth's remarks in the interview, and seeing her in concert many times, I would guess that it would still be a strange reality for her to understand that the #1 prize for a contest would be a "meet and greet" with her. I can just imagine her thinking "really??? I'm the prize???" (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

She's a great prize gift for ALL of us!

Thanks again.

Stumbled over an article in a danish magazine today .
A interview where Beth starts to cry . And a competition where a meet and greet with Beth, is the no. 1 prize .
I have translated the interview, with my bad english . I hope you can understand it (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ..
The danish version with picture can be seen in the danish forum (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) ..

Honest Beth Hart (from "Vibrate", written by Sofie Kyhl)

Few years ago Beth Hart was dying because of drugs. Now she’s back with a new album and a number of concerts in Denmark. Vibrate has had an honest and tearful talk with Beth Hart, about her down trip and comeback.

The success that got to much
Once was lost and now is found. If Beth Hart should write and article about herself, that would the headline. Before you think sweetsoup (WTF ? (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/tongue.gif) ..) you have to know Beth’s story. The American singer/songwriter has been in more dirt than the average 35yearold. In 1999 she had a big-time hit with L.A. Song from her other album, Screamin’ For My Supper, but the success became and ingredient that Beth could not bear. A drink now and then, a row here and there, became a hardcore abuse, which almost killed the eccentric singer with fluttering hair, many tattoos and filthy language. She fled from the public eye, and has been admitted on both drug-addiction clinic and the locked ward. With help from friends Beth Hart managed to sober up and on the same time go back to what she back then couldn’t bear. She rocked with the album Leave The Light On in 2004, and is now current with a new album, and is soon starting a tour in Denmark, Holland and Norway.

Denmark kicks ass
Beth is living in L.A., but Vibrate catches her over the phone in Arizona where her mom lives, and where Beth is charging for the coming tour. Soon Beth is changing the red desert sand and the cactuses out, to Denmark’s grey and wet plough field, and it’s not bothering her at all. - I’m looking forward to come to Denmark, all though it’s cold there and raining. Cause it’s never raining in L.A., laughs Beth, who has now been in Denmark tons of times.
- I don’t know what it is with me and Denmark, but I love your country. The Danes are so polite and obliging. No matter where I go in Denmark, people always greets me. L.A. is cool, but people aren’t very kind there, Beth Hart explains. And she admits willingly that she doesn’t really like the Swedes, because she thinks they are impolite. Point to Denmark!

Doesn’t miss the parties
All though Beth is looking forward to the Danish tour life, it is also a dangerous trip for her.
- I love touring, cause I get to perform. But that also means that I miss some of my AA-meetings. And I HAVE to go to these meetings, and I HAVE to eat right and work out. Otherwise I will go mad, and totally freak out - and it’s there it starts go get dangerous, Beth tells, who by daily basis is witness to lots of party and troubles backstage.
- It is freakin’ fun to look at my band when they are partying. They love Jack Daniels, and they smoke, party and rock hard every night. In a way I party along with them, and it is so cool that they can party that way. I would do that too if I just knew how to, Beth laughs. She doesn’t miss the life as the centre of the party. - NOTHING can make me drink again. I have seen and experienced enough, I’ve been so far out and it’s goddamn terrifying, she adds tough.

A bad role model
The lyrics in 37 Days are, like in the previous album, about Beth herself, even though she’s not focusing much on the down trip this time, like she did in Leave The Light On. - My psychologist tells me to keep some things private, but I’ve found out that the biggest help for me is to tell my story. I have lied before and kept things secret, but now I know, that honesty is everything, tells Beth, who doesn’t care about the rumours that turns up. - Nothing can be as bad as almost dying by drugs, and my reputation doesn’t mean a shit. Cause people are thinking what the want, says Beth, who gladly admits that she would change almost everything if she could go back in time. - I’ve said so many bad things to people and done so many bad things. Like for example, putting the tour bus on fire, and I can’t change these things. I can only apologize, Beth admits and laughs bitterly of the fact that she, in a way, is a role model to her many fans: - I’ve been a terrible role model, I only did all the thing I shouldn’t do. It’s just now, I realize that, as I public person, I have a certain responsibility.

Life is fascinating
Beth Hart hasn’t touched drugs or alcohol in 4 years, and every day she meets thing, experiences or humans, which she before had to be stunned to be able to handle. On the same time, she has almost gotten a childish fascination of life: - I am fascinated by almost everything. Friends, enemies, buildings, plants, the theatre, movies, animals - life itself is fascinating in my eyes. And I have become so friggin sensitive, Beth ends the interview, when he voice cracks. Choked by tears she insists to tell about the other day, when her moms dog, was hit by a car. Beth cries so bad, that I get nervous for what I started with this interview. Luckily Beth starts to laugh through the tears, and says that dog will survive. Relieved I hang up and wish her good luck with it all - and still wishing that it was me sitting in Arizona’s desert and being able to look forward to rain, wind and the Danish low degrees.
Life is indeed fascinating.

I love to hear the spot. Its soooo funny, whit your language: some of it, is relly easy to understand ( i´m from Denmark) and some is just pure rubbish (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif) like my language proberly is.
Anyway... im glad that Beth speaks American (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/laugh.gif)

Beth is also on tv tonight (Saterday 22/09/07) in Holland. De show called " Mooi Weer De Leeuw " I don't know if you can watch the show online, can't find the link at the moment.

On the same night Beth will be a guest on "Met Het Oog Op Morgen", a radio show on radio 1.

Hey Gemma,

Thanks so much for posting the link to Beth's interview! Once I found it... that was a lot of fun to hear. Sad though how in the USA we almost NEVER hear of Beth being interviewed on the radio and NEVER have I heard her music being played on Southern California's supposedly "rock" radio stations. Corporate radio ownership has things pretty much locked up here. Most radio stations here are, for the most part, one flavor... Corporate Classic Rock "VANILLA"! Nothing new EVER! (IMG:http://bethhart.com/bethboard/style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Thanks again..

Curt
